CAREER SUMMARY
Mr. Simpson is an Assistant Director and Radiation Safety Officer within Iowa State University’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety. He is a Principal with Highmark Associates, LLC. Mr. Simpson has over twenty years in radiation safety compliance, environmental site decommissioning and radiological emergency response.
Radiation Safety
Mr. Simpson has participated in all safety aspects involved in the management of a large radiation safety program. This includes, but not limited to licensing and renewal of a university broadscope radioactive materials license, development and implementation of programmatic standard operating procedures, management of the radioactive materials inventory and low-level radioactive waste and interpretation of federal, state and local rules, regulations and guidelines relating to the management of a broadscope radiation safety program.
Environmental Site Decommissioning
Mr. Simpson has been involved in multiple environmental site decommissioning. The project required the project planning and development strategies that worked within regulatory guidelines. The projects include development of site surveys, sampling and safety plans.
Mr. Simpson worked closely with the regulatory stakeholders. He worked to develop strong relationships to enhance cooperation and collaboration throughout the projects to ensure that the final site decommissioning reports were accurate and acceptable.
Radiological Emergency Response
Mr. Simpson has been involved in emergency management formally for thirteen years. He is a State of Iowa Radiological Emergency Response Team Coordinator and manages the radiological response teams housed at Iowa State University.
Mr. Simpson has aided in the development of field team standard operating programs. He has work with Iowa Homeland Security to develop of the dosimetry form and emergency worker dose tracking database.
Mr. Simpson actively participates in the FEMA Region VII RAC program and the National Radiological Emergency Program Conference as well as quarterly off-site meetings with the nuclear utilities.
